Welcome to our blog! Mara and Brandon here 💚 Laying the subfloor was the first project where it felt like we added something to the bus.

It also took planning and patience!

(72 hours worth of patience…😂)

📄 Research

We used the YouTube channel by Chuck Cassady to do most of the research for this project. He has many videos on skoolie build processes and we felt that the method he talked about when building out the floor made sense for our build.

⚙️ Planning🪛

After applying a rust protective layer and a waterproof seal, the bus was ready for the subfloor. Thankfully we are both short enough that we did not need a roof raise nor did we need to skimp on floor insulation height. We knew we wanted to take it to colder climates so insulation was a big focus. We decided 2 inch thick foam insulation was best, topped with 3/4” plywood. The guy we bought the bus from included pre-cut floor pieces which was a huge blessing. We gathered our materials, found items we could use as weights, and got to work!

💪🏼 Execution

Because each glued piece would need as much weight as we could give it, we did the floor in sections. Each piece of foam was measured and cut to size and then wood floor pieces were lined up in preparation. Getting the Loctite to come out of the tube in a good, consistent line proved harder than it looked in Chuck’s videos 😂 but we eventually found a rhythm..

Once the foam was in place, the top would get glued and then the wood placed on top. We filled some coolers and a tub with water and applied every cinderblock or other heavy material we could find. After letting it sit for 24 hours, we moved on to the next section, three in total. After the floor had long enough to set, I taped out the floor plan 🙌

This was a really satisfying project as it really felt like things were starting to come together.
